The word “gimbal” is defined as a pivoted support that allows rotation of any object in a single axis. So a three-axis gimbal allows any object mounted on the gimbal to be independent of the movement of the one holding the gimbal. The gimbal dictates the movement of the object, not the one carrying it.

This is what we refer to as pan, tilt, and roll stabilization.

The 3 axis gimbal stabilizes the tilt, pan, and roll of a camera. So if you move side to side, up and down, back and forth, the gimbal stabilizes the video even if you are shaky.
Tilting is moving up and down. This feature of a camera stabilizer is used to take a video of an object moving up and down or vice versa. Taking a video of a person going down and up the stairs or an object falling to the ground are good examples of the tilt axis.
Panning is moving from left to right and vice versa. This feature of the gimbal is used when following an object moving horizontally.
The roll is a good feature to use when somebody is moving back and forth. If you are to take a video of the sunset and you will be moving back and forth, you’d want your video to focus on the same area where the sunset is even if you have to move forward or backward.

We use a tiny gyroscope called an IMU or Inertial Measurement Unit inside the gimbal. The IMU understands the commands of the camera and gimbal operator to stabilize the movement using the pan, tilt and roll motors to level the camera.
The gimbal uses the IMU to detect any sudden jolts or movements of the person holding the camera. These motions are canceled out on the gimbal by powering the three brushless motors to keep the gimbal stabilized within milliseconds of unwanted motion.
